Special Days are up first—we missed Rat Catcher’s Day on July 22! Jason talks a bit about the massive storm that hit Washington (part of someone’s roof is in the photo above).
We then talk about yet another Republican politician advocating secession. From there it’s a talk about the current right wing meme about who is a “patriot” and a “real American”. Where’s the pushback to their rhetoric? Part of the problem is how far right the Republican Party has moved.
Arthur brings up the controversy over the political spending by the retailer Target. That leads to a wider discussion about the efficacy of boycotts, citizen action, and the need for a longer term, historical view of politics.

We tried a different sound set-up today, but we still we had a few issues. After Special Days, we talk about the upcoming elections. The Republicans could take control of the US House, and that would be a disaster. Arthur is sick of the mainstream media allowing the rightwing to get away with their nonsense, and that leads to a wider discussion.
From there, we talk about another lunatic, a Republican panderer from the South. Hypocrisy comes to mind, along with stupidity. These leads us to speculate on what’s wrong with the mainstream newsmedia in the US. We talk about the “fear factors” that the Republicans keep pushing. Arthur says Republicans are actively working to make things worse for ordinary Americans, working only for the rich and corporate elites. He then moves it back to his pet peeve. Jason points out a reason for hope.

We had some big sound issues today, but we persevered. We’re also trying to do shorter episodes more often. We’ll see how we go.
We start off with Arthur talking a bit about Pride 48, which was this past weekend. Then it’s on to our main topic for today, Elena Kagan, whose nomination process has begun. The Republicans are just being silly. Why shouldn’t a liberal justice be replaced with a liberal justice?
This leads to a discussion of the recent gun ruling by the Supreme Court, and the right’s attempts to re-write the US Constitution. A call from Australia allows us to talk about a lesbian judge, and that leads to a discussion of Iceland and the Internet.

No Special Days today, because Jason talks about a holiday special instead. Then we talk about a topic today: Glass houses. We take three recent incidents of people completely missing the point of pushback against things they’ve done, instead attacking their critics: A Homophobic column by British columnist Jan Moir, Rush Limbaugh missing out on the chance to be a part-owner of the St. Louis Rams and the Mormons claiming they’re being treated the same as African Americans in the 1960s.
These topics allow us to elaborate on one of the background issues about these folks: They can’t see their own homophobia, racism or religious intolerance, nor the consequences of them. We even mention George H.W. Bush—in a different context.

After Special Days, we talk a bit about the Nobel Peace Prize, then Alan Grayson. That leads eventually into talk about the newsmedia, left v. right, and in general. It’s another wide-ranging talk.

We begin today with a few housekeeping bits, then Jason offers to rebrand the Republican Party—a sort of truth in labelling, you could say. Special Days are next, then it’s on to the topics of the day—the state of the campaign for healthcare reform, the crazy people and the extent to which the mainstream newsmedia has made things worse. We also talk about liberals’ impatience with Obama. Will the Republicans be able to capitalise on all this in the next election? The truth is, no one knows or can know this far away. The September 11 anniversary is this Friday, so we talk a bit about where things are now. That brings us back to Republican distortions.

Jason’s special days are just fun ones today—nothing too serious, which is good, because we start today with a real nutcase and I follow that with something from another. This leads to a discussion of extremists, both on the left and the right. How does extremism relate to terrorism? One of the extremist groups we talk about is in trouble in Australia. We also talk about the influence of the right wing media. There’s also some New Zealand political news this week!
After the discussion, we have comments on our previous episode. That raises topics we discuss. Finally, Arthur provides an update on swine flu in New Zealand.

We begin with Jason’s special days, but today’s episode is mostly a discussion with our first guest, Peter (aka epilonious). We look at civility on the Internet, the origins and implications of the lack of civility. It’s a wide-ranging discussion, and other political issues come up, too, including how to deal with religious arguments. We wrap up with our advice and strategies for avoiding “uncivility wars” on the Internet.

Jason’s special days span the globe, but Arthur adds one from space. We begin talking about the flu outbreak, especially how the media did in reporting about it. Was New Zealand’s media coverage any different? From there it’s a discussion of President Obama’s first 100 days, which then leads to a discussion of Arlen Specter changing parties and the two main parties generally. Arthur mentions a podcaster’s challenge, and why the right just doesn’t “get” new media or the Internet Age.
There are extensive comments on the last episode, so we don’t read them all. Instead, we talk about them and the topics they raise. Back in 2 weeks!
