01 Sep 2010 @ 7:15 PM

This episode was delayed by a week due to Arthur having a very busy schedule. However, there will be a new episode in a few days!

Instead of Special Days, today Jason has a special event. Following that, Arthur has some housekeeping about the 2Political site. We begin talking about the Pew Research poll finding a shocking percentage of Americans think President Obama is Muslim (or don’t know). That leads to a discussion of Republican birther antics and what they’re really up to. That leads on to some talk about the “ground zero mosque”, which is not a mosque and not at ground zero. That, in turn, leads on to a discussion of the upcoming elections.

Please leave a comment (anyone’s welcome—agree or disagree!), or you can ring the 2Political Comment line on 206-350-3982.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgWe tried to do a shorter episode today. After Special Days, Jason talks a bit about the passing of Patricia Neal and one of her movies that he highly recommends. He then shares a pet peeve.

We begin today with Right Wing Nut Jobs (RWNJs), in particular, Sharron Angle. Her nutty positions are actually related to the boycott of Target, which we talk about next. After that, it’s the Walker ruling overturning California’s infamous Proposition 8. We talk about that, and especially what the right has been saying and what a “religious exemption” logically means. Arthur suggests the way that marriage ought to be handled by government.

A couple last things: We have a new Supreme Court Justice! Did you miss that news? We even talk a little about iTunes.

RoofDown

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgSpecial Days are up first—we missed Rat Catcher’s Day on July 22! Jason talks a bit about the massive storm that hit Washington (part of someone’s roof is in the photo above).

We then talk about yet another Republican politician advocating secession. From there it’s a talk about the current right wing meme about who is a “patriot” and a “real American”. Where’s the pushback to their rhetoric? Part of the problem is how far right the Republican Party has moved.

Arthur brings up the controversy over the political spending by the retailer Target. That leads to a wider discussion about the efficacy of boycotts, citizen action, and the need for a longer term, historical view of politics.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgWe tried a different sound set-up today, but we still we had a few issues. After Special Days, we talk about the upcoming elections. The Republicans could take control of the US House, and that would be a disaster. Arthur is sick of the mainstream media allowing the rightwing to get away with their nonsense, and that leads to a wider discussion.

From there, we talk about another lunatic, a Republican panderer from the South. Hypocrisy comes to mind, along with stupidity. These leads us to speculate on what’s wrong with the mainstream newsmedia in the US. We talk about the “fear factors” that the Republicans keep pushing. Arthur says Republicans are actively working to make things worse for ordinary Americans, working only for the rich and corporate elites. He then moves it back to his pet peeve. Jason points out a reason for hope.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgWe had some big sound issues today, but we persevered. We’re also trying to do shorter episodes more often. We’ll see how we go.

We start off with Arthur talking a bit about Pride 48, which was this past weekend. Then it’s on to our main topic for today, Elena Kagan, whose nomination process has begun. The Republicans are just being silly. Why shouldn’t a liberal justice be replaced with a liberal justice?

This leads to a discussion of the recent gun ruling by the Supreme Court, and the right’s attempts to re-write the US Constitution. A call from Australia allows us to talk about a lesbian judge, and that leads to a discussion of Iceland and the Internet.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgAfter special days, we talk first about the oil spill. What could be done differently? After that, we move on the antics of some teabaggers. Traitors? We present our case to say some are. Neither of us thinks much of the teabaggers.

We also talk about the Arkansas primary, and that leads into a discussion of the antics of the Left of the Democratic Party. Arthur talks a bit about GetEqual as an example of self-defeating behaviour. Neither of us is impressed with the self-righteousness of either end of the spectrum, but with Democrats it could prove disastrous for everything Democrats believe in.

Toward the end, we even consider at a match-up between Senators Durbin and Schumer for Democratic Leader in the US Senate.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgAfter special days, we talk a bit about Pride 48, a podcasting marathon Arthur is the host of this year. 2Political is being played along with other recorded podcasts.

Then we talk about the results from recent primary elections. The teabaggers didn’t get what they thought they would and the media hasn’t understood what they were talking about. The chicken lady is revisited, too. From there, we talk about the latest sex scandal with a “family values” Republican. Arthur has no sympathy for ex-Rep. Souder, and less than none for George Rekers, a hatemonger who fell from grace recently, too.

A major topic is Facebook’s contempt for personal privacy and what companies like that should be doing. Arthur shares some tips for protecting your privacy on Facebook, to the extent you can. Comments round out the episode.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgWe had a lot of things come up that kept us from podcasting sooner. It happens. After a basketful of Special Days, we talk about the teabagger and gun-nut rallies in and near Washington, DC. That leads to a general discussion of the intellectual bankruptcy of the teabagger right and the Republican Party in particular, including their “chickens for checkups” candidate. We also talk a bit about presidential appointments, with a Supreme Court nominee to be announced soon. A phone comment and written comment let us expand on topics a bit more.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgThe passage of the healthcare reform bill starts us off today, and we then move on to the politics that swirled around Washington, DC that weekend. The teabaggers are a topic. That movement was co-opted by corporate elites, turning it into a mostly aggressive fascist movement. So, what do we call the original Tea Party folks, the ones who aren’t crazy? Republicans don’t get off lightly this episode, either, especially the “Tenthers” and other extremists. Comments let us talk a bit about more, including that infamous recent Supreme Court decision. Arthur screwed up the end of the podcast, but fixed it (mostly) in editing. That’s why there’s so much giggling.

2pp_album_art_110x1101.jpgSpecial Days are back, and there’s an international aspect today. Then, we talk about passing healthcare reform through reconciliation, and that means talking about Republican hypocrisy Arthur names names, calling out the liars. Then we talk about America’s new McCarthy, Liz Cheney. We then talk a bit about John McCain’s re-election troubles, which leads to a larger discussion of the fringe taking over the Republican mainstream. Arthur says the 24-hour drumbeat on the right can’t end well, and we talk about that and some of the reasons things are as they are. Even the mainstream newsmedia isn’t immune from our gaze.

Comments let us talk a bit about snow, cognitive dissonance, the Canadian “dictatorship” and teabaggers—we have great listeners! As a matter of fact, almost half this episode is a discussion of a comment—which is the whole point in having comments, to foster a conversation. Keep those comments coming!
